Young children who have this disorder that is on the autism spectrum start displaying the tendencies at a very young age. By age two, they can be obsessed with a specific toy and spend hours playing with it quietly in the corner. They may not wish to be with the rest of the family, but enjoy being by themselves. They may line toys up in specific order and melt down if things get out of line. Example: Lining toy cars up in a line, with each one being exactly in place next to the other.

Asperger children often have meltdowns. This is not a regular temper tantrum. This can go on for hours, or only a few minutes. Months later, the child may once again meltdown over the incident when you’re least expecting it. Parents would have thought it was something that was long forgotten.

Asperger syndrome is mainly prevalent in boys, though girls do have it occasionally. The child may seem odd or eccentric. He may have odd mannerisms and have trouble socializing. Children who have this disorder do not usually experience language delays, but are very intelligent and have memories that may seem almost photographic. They may not like to be cuddled or touched often. Certain textures in food or clothing can make them extremely upset. They may refuse to eat certain foods because of the way it feels in their mouths. They may refuse to wear certain pieces of clothing because the feel of it on their skin is abrasive.

Children who suffer from Asperger syndrome are often described as “odd” or “quirky.” It is believed that the disorder is hereditary.

If you have a child that displays the above tendencies, you might want to do more research on Asperger syndrome, which is on the pervasive development spectrum.

Related posts:

Practical Parenting – Teaching Your Child What He Needs to Learn

Reading Activities for Your Child

Parenting the Active Toddler

How to Select a Jogging Stroller

Beauty & Fitness

Just For Mom

jogging strollers

offer

security

shape

size wheels

smooth surfaces

three wheels

ultra violet rays

Use

wheel

Jogging strollers are great for new moms that want to get back into shape but don’t have anyone to leave their little one with for safety and security. Lots of benefits exist to this scenario- your baby gets some fresh air, you get the exercise that you need and want, plus you get to explore the neighborhood.

If you need some help deciding which stroller to purchase, consider the following information. Jogging strollers have two wheels in the back and one in the front. Although most jogging strollers have three wheels, the wheels are available in varying sizes. How do you know which size to get?

The smallest size wheels, about 12 inches, are good to use on smooth surfaces such as sidewalks, bike paths, or indoor tracks. The largest size wheels, those that are 20 inches or more in diameter, are excellent for those who want to go off the beaten path or road and for long distances. Medium size wheels, about 16 inches, are good for frequent use that might include a bit of off road use along with smooth surfaces.

The front wheel of a jogging stroller is generally fixed unless it is a hybrid. In that case, the hybrid wheel is set up to swivel. Hybrid jogging strollers offer the versatility of being used in circumstances other than jogging on trails. They are terrific for navigating malls with your child since the front wheel turns easily and you aren’t forced to lift the jogging stroller on its back wheels to allow you to change direction.

Its important to make sure that your baby’s jogging stroller comes equipped with a five point harness to keep your child tucked safely into when you are jogging along at full speed. Additionally, a wrist tether offers the added safety of preventing the jogging stroller from getting too far away from you should you accidentally lose your grip on the handle.

Canopies offer protection against the ultra-violet rays of the sun, as well as light mist. Padded seats with reclining capability offer a nice comfortable spot for the baby to rest while he takes a snooze. If you intend to do some jogging on heavy duty trails, invest in a jogging stroller with shocks.

A few final points to ponder while considering which jogging stroller to purchase include its size, ease of folding it, and cost. Will it fit into the trunk of your car? Does it take more than one person to fold the stroller? Are you going to use the jogging stroller enough to merit the amount of money that it costs?

Related posts:

Talk, Talk and More Talk For Effective Learning

What Happens in a Car Crash?

Standardization of crib and crib mattress sizes

Soy’s Potential Hazards

1st Trimester

2nd Trimester

3rd Trimester

Anxiety

Home and Hearth

astounding revelations

birth control pills

female hormone estrogen

male puberty

male sex organs

There are a lot of things in our daily diets that fall under the category of “A little is good, a lot is harmful”. One of those things, surprisingly, is a “health-food” that is potentially causing health issues for millions.

It has recently been released that soybeans and soy products contain high levels of the female hormone estrogen. Consuming too much of the hormone may lead to many problems, most notably in infants and young children.

Being pregnant is no picnic, and wanting to feed yourself and your growing baby is a paramount consideration. Ingestion of large amounts of soy products can boost your estrogen supply to unhealthy levels. If you are feeding an infant a soy-based formula, it is estimated that the child is absorbing the equivalent of up to five birth control pills a day.

Some of the most astounding revelations about soy are the increased risks of breast and other cancers, infertility, childhood leukemia, and thyroid damage. Outstanding symptoms may include weight gain, depression and fatigue. Even more startling is soy’s impact on male sex organs, estrogen overload, testosterone suppression, premature female puberty, and delayed male puberty.

Statistically, 60% of refined foods available in the U.S. now contain soy products. You may be consuming it in unwanted quantities if you are not alert and reading your ingredients and nutritional information. Even fast food is not immune, with many establishments listing soy flour as part of their bread products. Soybean oil is also high on the ingredients list of many products offered in restaurants and grocery stores nationwide.

Why does this not affect Oriental cultures as much? Though the use of soy products is believed to have mainly come from the Orient, it is not as widely consumed on a daily basis there. Many products, such as soy sauce, are fermented or otherwise altered, thereby reducing the estrogen impact.

As with anything else you may eat or drink, be sure you know what you are putting into your body. It may not be a healthy for you as you think.

Related posts:

Weight Gain during Pregnancy

Alcohol, drugs and pregnancy

Vitamin D -The Unique Vitamin

How to Prevent Premature Labor

2nd Trimester

3rd Trimester

Anxiety

abusive relationship

african american women

bed

child

doctor

labor

multiple babies

Premature

preterm births

weeks of pregnancy

Premature labor is classified as labor that begins before 36 weeks of pregnancy, but it can be as early as 22 weeks. For obvious reasons, preterm labor is dangerous for the baby who is not yet ready to face the world. If you know that you are at risk for giving birth early, there are a few steps you can take to help your baby make it to term.

First, you need to know if you are at risk. Your doctor will most likely let you know, but here are some basic guidelines for your personal use. At risk pregnancies include the very young (under 17 years of age) and older (over 35) women, women carrying multiple babies, women with a history of preterm births, women who suffer from cervical or uterine variations (such as a divided uterus), and African American women.

Your lifestyle can also cause you to go into labor prematurely. If you don’t see a doctor or receive prenatal care during your pregnancy, you are more likely to have your baby early. Also, women who are under a lot of stress, have little or no social support and are in an abusive relationship are at risk for preterm labor. Anyone who abuses drugs, drinks alcohol or smokes during the pregnancy is also at a higher risk than those who quit these habits.

One of the first steps to avoiding premature labor is to quit any of the bad habits listed above. Stopping smoking or using drugs can drastically reduce your chances of having a premature baby. It’s healthier for both you and your unborn child, as well. Also, if you are in an abusive relationship, it might be time to get out.

For women who have jobs that require them to be on their feet most of the time, such as waitresses, bartenders, etc. this can also raise your risk level. It’s a good idea to talk to your boss about being able to sit if at all possible, or you may need to reduce your hours. Talk to your doctor about this.

Taking good care of yourself during the pregnancy is perhaps the best way to avoid having your baby early. Eat well and get enough rest. You should also be taking prenatal vitamins to ensure that your baby doesn’t sap all of the vitamins and minerals out of your body, which can cause deficiencies and early labor. Good prenatal care is vital to catch any problems that might occur, before they result in anything serious . . . like premature labor. If you can’t afford to see a doctor, there are free prenatal clinics all over the country that can help.

If you suspect that you are starting preterm labor, it is important that you go to the hospital immediately. They will be able to administer drugs to stop the contractions and halt the process if possible. The signs of preterm labor include contractions that are less than 10 minutes apart, with or without pain, menstrual-like cramps, a sensation of pressure in the vagina (the baby dropping), and possibly a flow of pinkish or brownish liquid from the vagina. This last one could mean that your water has broken, in which case, you need to get to the emergency room ASAP as the baby will be born soon and needs the special care of experts.

Should the preterm labor be preventable, it is quite possible that you will be required to stay in bed until your baby is physically ready to be born. For some women, this means several months of bed rest. You might be tempted to ignore the doctor’s orders, especially if you are feeling fine, but this is a mistake that could cost your child his life. You may also be given medications to prevent early contractions.

In many cases, premature labor is preventable if you know ahead of time that you are at risk. Your doctor or midwife is the best person to advise you in this situation and you should be sure that you follow their advice, even if you get bored of being in bed all day! Premature labor is very dangerous to your baby and should be avoided at all costs.

Related posts:

Natural Ways to Induce Labor

Labor Signs

Induce Your Labor Naturally

Indulge Yourself at Hepburn Spa

Alternative Health Therapies

Stress and Relaxation

aromatherapy

dead sea salt

different massages

sea salt bath

Spa

spa menu

spa rooms

water

way

Yourself

If you are looking for a way to relax on your holidays, the Hepburn Spa at Hepburn Springs could be just the place. While it is technically normal to deliver up to 2 weeks after your due date, the wait can be interminable for some women. If you are suffering from back pain, difficulty sleeping and all those other fun, late-pregnancy irritations, you might want to consider inducing your labor naturally at home once you have passed the date.

Remember that it is only acceptable to induce labor after your due date. The natural methods given here are not to be tried before 40 weeks of pregnancy as your baby could be born too early and have problems. It is also a good idea to let your midwife or doctor know that you want to try inducing naturally.

Sex is one method of inducing labor that has worked for many couples. The semen contains prostaglandins, a hormone which can help start labor. This hormone is naturally produced by the woman’s body in order to begin the labor process and adding in a little extra can’t hurt!

Nipple stimulation is a good way to get your uterus contracting, but be aware that it can also cause very intense contractions. Daily stimulation at the end of a pregnancy can stimulate the onset of labor, sometimes in as little as 20-30 minutes, but it depends on the woman. You may manually manipulate the nipples (or have your partner do it) or apply a hot compress. Both methods help release oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract. Nipple stimulation is often used in combination with other natural methods.

Another tried and true method of inducing labor involves walking. While it can be a bit boring just pacing around your house, it’s not a good idea to go for a hike in the local wildlife park unless you have company. If your contractions start far from home and you are alone, you could be in trouble, so take a walking partner with you. This method requires more than just a jaunt around the block, so be prepared to trudge a few miles at least. This isn’t a very good method if you are suffering from hip or pelvic pains.

Some people swear by having a little chat with your unborn child. Since it is now known that the baby is the one who releases the first hormones in the domino effect that triggers labor, letting him know that you’re ready might do the trick. Have your partner do some of the talking too and you won’t feel quite so silly!

In addition to physical things like walking and sex, you might also want to try eating or drinking your way into labor. Certain teas and foods are supposed to help stimulate labor and have been used for centuries. A good example is raspberry leaf tea, given to many women as they near the end of their pregnancy. It is supposed to make the labor easier, as well, and who doesn’t want that?

Labor is never much fun, but if you have control over when it starts, you might be able to better handle the pain. As well, it will be less intense if stimulated naturally than if your doctor prescribes a stronger method such as oxytocin in the hospital.

Related posts:

Natural Ways to Induce Labor

Labor Signs

How to Prevent Premature Labor

Banish the Baby Blues

Depression

Moms-To-Be

Postnatal Care

emotional exhaustion

good listener

highs and lows

stress release

tender loving care

You thought the hard part was over. You carried the baby for nine months and you survived morning sickness, backaches and even the pain of delivery. Now you’re home with your sweet little bundle of joy. You should be brimming with happiness but instead you can’t understand why you feel so miserable.

More than likely you’re suffering from the baby blues otherwise known as postpartum
depression. Nearly half of all new mothers suffer from some level of depression. Several factors such as physical, mental and emotional exhaustion can play a role in the resulting depressed state. Stress and emotions can also result in periods of highs and lows. Postpartum depression is not abnormal and only becomes so when the depression becomes severe or continues for an extended period of time.

You can beat the baby blues. Here are a few tips to help you do so. First of all, don’t keep emotions bottled up. Talk about how you feel. Talk to someone who is understanding and a good listener. This person can be your significant other, a friend or relative. It really doesn’t matter as long as it is someone you feel comfortable talking to and that you can be yourself around. Join a support group or get together with other new mothers. Communicating your emotions openly with others who can honestly relate to your feelings can be a great stress release.

As much as you love your new baby, motherhood can be both rewarding and overwhelming. Remember to make time for yourself. If you’re tired and cranky, your baby will know it. New mothers often mistakenly feel that if they don’t spend every waking moment with their babies they are not good mothers. Of course that is completely untrue. You need time for yourself and you shouldn’t feel guilty about taking a break. You take good care of your baby’s needs but you have to remember not to neglect your own needs. You need some tender loving care once in a while too.

Ask a friend or relative to care for your child and go out to dinner with your partner or have lunch with a friend. Even a quiet night at home can be a good way to relax, unwind and replenish your body, mind and spirit. Take a bubble bath to soothe away tension and then take a nap to refresh and reinvigorate. Light a few candles, burn some incense and listen to soft music. Call an old friend and catch up on what’s been happening with each other. Take a walk down memory lane and have a few laughs. Kick your feet up; curl up on the couch and watch a good movie or read an interesting book.

If you really want to splurge, visit a salon and get a new hairstyle. Go get your nails done; better yet – have a manicure and pedicure. Get a massage or a facial. A beauty treatment can make you feel totally amazing and getting a new look can provide you with a renewed outlook and more vibrant energy.

Postpartum depression usually disappears within a few weeks as you adjust to your new role and things begin to fall into place. If the depression continues, speak to your physician or schedule an appointment with a counselor to help find the cause of your depression. Remember to nurture yourself. By doing so, you are better prepared to nurture your child.

Related posts:

Dealing With Grief During Your Pregnancy

New Mom’s Survival CDs – Overcome Postpartum Depression

Regulate your hormones during the tumultuous postpartum period

Baby Monitor

Parenting Skills

ambulance

asthma attack

baby

Body

home

horror stories

paramedic student

single mom

son jamie

wasn

I was a single mother attending college, and dead tired from cramming for finals. It was about one in the morning when I crawled under my sheets, happy to feel the smooth coolness against my tired body and brain.

My two-year-old son, Jamie, had been tucked into his own bed hours ago.

I didn’t even bother to put Tommy, our yellow Tomcat, out for the night.

Ordinarily I’m a light sleeper, and the slightest sound always wakes me. (When you’re a single mom, you’re used to hearing your child and getting up to tend to him). But that night was different. I wasn’t used to late nights.

I always kept the TV on at night, with the volume down. It was my night light on those nights when I had to make a trip to my little boy’s bed, maybe to help him to the bathroom, or take him a drink of water.

It was a couple of hours later that Tommy pounced on top of me and let out a cry that chilled my spine.

He wouldn’t stop. He’d never acted that way before.

Thinking he wanted outside, I got up to open the door.

But instead of running out, he ran back to my son’s room. A blur of yellow passed by my vision in the faint light of the TV.

I flipped the ceiling light on and ran to my boy’s room.

Oh my God.

Horror stories raced through my mind. Of cats smothering babies. Of cats scratching them. Of cats waking families up in a fire.

It wasn’t a fire, but just as frightening.

Jamie was sitting up, gasping for breath, having what looked like an asthma attack. Clutching his throat, he struggled to breathe, and turned panicked eyes to me.

He couldn’t breathe.

I snatched him up and ran to the phone to call an ambulance.

“Hurry!” I yelled into the receiver. My voice and body were trembling.

I then called my cousin, who was a paramedic student.

“Take him outside for a change in air temperature until the ambulance gets there, and turn a steaming shower on so he can breathe the steam.”

I did both, alternating between the shower and the outside, all the time praying as hard as I could. I knew I could do artificial respiration and CPR if I had to, but I didn’t want it to get that bad.

Tommy paced nervously around us.

It seemed like it took forever for the ambulance to get there.

My son’s breathing finally returned to normal, but we rode to the hospital for a checkup just to make sure he was okay.

“Does he have a history of asthma?” the emergency room doctor asked.

“None. This is the first time this has happened. What is it?”

“Has there been a crisis or a very difficult time in the household lately?”

I thought about it.

“My uncle died a few weeks ago in an automobile accident. He lived with us.”

“It’s probably a reaction to stress. Children, even as young as he is, can be affected by traumatic events like that.”

I hadn’t realized. I had tried so hard to shield him from my grief. He and his great uncle had had a lot of fun together.

“He’s okay now,” the doctor said. “If it happens again, bring him back.”

I picked up my son and called a cab to go home, hugging him long and hard as we stood there on the curb waiting for the taxi.

“It’s okay now, baby. We’re going home.”

He seemed fine now. We were home five minutes later, and I was full of adrenaline instead of fatigue. All my little one wanted to do was go to sleep, so I rocked him, never wanting to let him out of my arms again.

I sat and thought about my uncle, and how children can pick up on emotions we think we’re hiding.

A soft purring interrupted my thoughts, and I felt Tommy rubbing around my ankle. I reached down to rub his head.

Tommy woke me up just in time. What was it? Divine intervention? An angel’s touch? Animal instinct? Again those corny bits on TV about cats saving lives came to my mind.

Not so corny now..

“Thank you, Tommy. Remind me to get you the biggest salmon I can find tomorrow.”

Related posts:

Don’t Throw the Baby Out With the Bath Water!

Organic mattresses for baby – best for healthy growth of your baby

Why is My Baby C rying?

Tips to Increase Fertility

Moms-To-Be

blood

blood glucose levels

Body

fasting glucose levels

fertility

glucose tolerance test

insulin resistance

low gi foods

stress

way

If you’re having a difficult time becoming pregnant, even with the assistance of fertility drugs and treatments, there is still hope. There are easy methods for you to use in order to drastically increase your chances of becoming pregnant so that you’ll soon be holding that precious bundle of joy in your arms.

Tip #1 – Insulin Check – Many women who find it difficult to get pregnant often suffer from a “silent” condition called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is sort of like a pre-diabetes state in which the body no longer responds properly to the amount of insulin that is produced. High amounts of blood glucose is produced which is why only extremely high amounts of insulin needs to be produced, since the body no longer responds to regular amounts of insulin. These spikes in blood glucose and insulin levels can interfere with ovulation, therefore making pregnancy nearly impossible.

Many fertility specialists and gynecologists will test fasting blood glucose levels in order to check for diabetes or other problems involving blood glucose levels such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, which could also cause infertility. Oftentimes, though, in insulin resistance, the fasting blood sugar is normal, especially early on in the condition. If the fasting glucose levels are normal then most doctors feel that there is no need to check insulin levels. This is a total misconception. A simple fasting blood insulin test can detect the problem, and some doctors even choose to use a glucose tolerance test, which is also a great diagnostic tool.

If insulin resistance is diagnosed, the proper diet, which would most likely consist of low carbohydrate or low GI foods, and possibly medication, can have you on your way to being a mom in no time. As soon as glucose and insulin levels are normalized, fertility should be restored, in many instances, as soon as one month.

Tip # 2 – Love your Liver- With so many “quick” meal options available, such as processed and fast foods, many women choose to take advantage of these quick options because of their convenience. Although these foods may taste good and provide convenience, they aren’t very healthy. These foods often contain unhealthy ingredients like MSG (monosodium glutamate), preservatives, trans-fats, etc. These artificial ingredients cause toxins to build up in the body due to the fact that the liver can’t get rid of the toxins quickly enough. A toxic body can severely alter fertility.

If you look forward to the convenience and ease of using these quick methods of preparing meals, you may not have to give them up completely in order to detoxify your body enough to restore fertility. Adding super foods like “perfect food” from Garden Of Life, or juicing fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to detoxify the liver. Another way to eliminate harmful toxic buildups is by purchasing convenient, ready-to-eat foods from your local health food store instead of eating the unhealthy foods that so many people are used to purchasing. Health food stores offer wide varieties of ready-to-eat meals that actually taste excellent. Some of the larger ones even offer a hot food bar and sometimes a juice bar, where you can purchase freshly squeezed juice.

A very potent yet safe herb that helps to rejuvenate and detoxify the liver is milk thistle. This wonder herb can be taken alone or as part of a liver tonic that is combined with other beneficial herbs. An excellent book to read is called “The Liver Cleansing Diet,” by Dr. Sandra Cabot. She also has several health tonics, one of which is called “Livatone.” This supplement contains milk thistle as its main ingredient, as well as other powerful constituents. These products can be purchased online at: http://www.weightcontroldoctor.com.

Tip # 3 – Effective Stress Relief – Everyone knows that stress can make us sick in various ways. Since stress can wreck so much havoc on the body, fertility is often one of the first things to be affected in women. Stress can prevent you from ovulating, and it can also cause hormonal imbalances, which causes further chaos in the reproductive system. Even if you aren’t currently trying to get pregnant, it’s of extreme importance to keep stress in check.

If your job is rather stressful, perhaps taking some time off work would be a good idea. Most jobs offer paid time off for a reason. Many employees choose to get extra money in their paychecks instead of taking regular vacations, but this isn’t always a good idea. Changes at work, employee conflict, and unfair supervisors are only a few work-related problems that can make you feel more stressed than usual. This is why taking a break from things can be very favorable for your overall health—and your fertility. An extended vacation isn’t always necessary; sometimes even brief one or two day retreats are just as healing as longer vacations.

Even simple things like taking up a new hobby, beginning an exercise regime or curling up with a good book at the end of each day work great to reduce stress. There don’t have to be any major changes in your routine in order to see and feel results. Just make sure that you take time for yourself on a daily basis and you will see a difference in your attitude, your outlook on life, and hopefully, soon your fertility.

Tip # 4 – Blood clotting – Some women have no problem at all becoming pregnant, but unfortunately, many, if not all of their pregnancies result in miscarriage. If this is something that you are experiencing, then you should consider having your blood clotting factors tested. Many women unknowingly suffer from genetic disorders that cause their blood to clot too quickly, resulting in the formation of blood clots throughout the body, and possibly in the placenta during pregnancy. Protein S deficiency, Protein C deficiency, MTHR and similar conditions make people more at risk of pulmonary embolisms and DVTs (deep vein thrombosis.) Pregnancy alone increases the risk of developing blood clots, so coupled with one of these preexisting conditions, carrying a baby can be really risky.

Although these conditions are quite dangerous, many women with “thick blood” are able to carry a baby full-term. In order to safely do so, genetic testing is suggested, as well as seeing a hematologist or a high risk obstetrician as soon as you discover you are pregnant. Early precautions can be made to help increase the chances of you carrying your baby to term. Ultrasounds, blood tests, baby aspirin, and even daily injected blood thinners may be part of your preventative protocol.

Hopefully these methods work for you and you are finally able to have the baby that you’ve always wanted. Nothing is guaranteed, though, so if it doesn’t happen now, it doesn’t mean that you won’t ever get pregnant. As the old saying goes, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Sometimes, if you stop focusing all of your attention on becoming pregnant, the unexpected could happen: you’ll conceive!

Related posts:

Glucose Test – Gestational Diabetes

Being Well Informed About Type 1 Diabetes

Naturally increase your milk production and flow for easy breastfeeding

Common Breastfeeding Hurdles

Just For Mom

breastfeeding

breastfeeding relationship

certified lactation consultant

flat nipples

pain

proper latch

sore nipples

Supply

way

Women

WIC Breastfeeding Counselor Women often find themselves at a loss on how to handle many breastfeeding issues. What’s worse is that they may not even realize how common and easily corrected these issues are, often ending an attempt at breastfeeding prematurely. Let’s examine some of these common issues and how to effectively correct them to assure a wonderful breastfeeding relationship.

The Latch –You may feel that your baby won’t nurse or that you simply can’t “get them on.” This is often because the baby is having a difficult time obtaining and sustaining a proper latch. This can happen for many reasons.

Women come in all shapes and sizes. That includes their breasts and nipples. Some breastfeeding mothers may find that their infants are having a hard time latching onto their breasts and sustaining a suckle. This may be attributed to inverted flat nipples. This is not a failure on the part of anyone and is easily corrected. Some women have found success with either an electric or manual pump to stimulate their nipples. This can draw out your nipples and make latching much easier for the baby.

Another method is the nipple shield. This is a small, thin, soft and pliable piece of silicone in the shape of an artificial nipple that is placed directly over the areola and nipple. It gives your baby a large and erect nipple to latch onto, while relieving some pain for you.

One of the best ways to help correct a latch problem is to seek professional support from a Certified Lactation Consultant. These women are certified and specially trained to handle most breastfeeding complications. Often they have nursed babies themselves. They can give you real time feed back and walk you through the steps necessary to create a proper latch, which will ensure pain free nursing.

An improper latch can sometimes lead to sore nipples. Your nipples are very likely not used to the amount of stimulation that they receive during breastfeeding. The pain can be eased by using breastfeeding safe, Lanolin. Another simpler method is to use your own breast milk to help heal the nipples. Simply express a small amount, gently rub it in, and then let the nipple air dry. Keeping shirts and clothing loose or off the skin may also help. Often, the culprit of extremely sore and bloody nipples is a faulty latch. If you are experiencing extreme pain, working to correct the baby’s latch may be the key.

Cluster Feeding – Human breast milk is the most easily digested food for infants. Add to that the fact that infants are growing at a rapid pace and you’ve discovered the answer to why some babies seem to nurse non-stop. This is commonly referred to as cluster feeding. It is perfectly normal and it does not mean you aren’t making enough milk. Cluster feedings can be both tiring and damage a mother’s self confidence in her abilities to create enough breast milk and keep up with the demands of her growing baby. There are ways to help allay some of those fears and concerns.

Checking a baby’s diaper is a great way for you to check your child’s intake on a regular basis. Babies will generally have 3-4 wet diapers a day, the first 3 days. After that, it’s common for a baby to have 6 wet diapers a day. Don’t forget to check for stools as well. You’ll find a breastfed baby will have 3 stools a day, often black and tar like, in the first 3 days. This is simply meconium passing. After that, a baby will normally produce 4 stools a day. You shouldn’t be alarmed if your baby doesn’t follow this pattern exactly. It certainly isn’t an exact science.

Another wonderful tool to put your mind at ease is the scale. You will want to make an appointment with either your Pediatrician or a Lactation Consultant to asses your baby’s weight before and after nursing. There, they can weigh the baby, in ounces, prior to and after breastfeeding to get an accurate picture of how much breast milk the baby is consuming. This can bring a big sigh of relief during those sleepy, hazy days post birth.

Finally, there are two rare, but commonly misunderstood, conditions that may lead to a premature end to the breastfeeding relationship. Low supply and a tongue tied baby.

Low Supply – This is actually a very rare issue and is often related to a hormonal imbalance or lack of stimulation. There are several ways to help alleviate this condition. One very simple way to correct this is to increase the number of breastfeeding sessions. If you’re timing your sessions and sticking to a rigid schedule, this may actually be harming your supply. Breast milk works on a supply and demand basis. Limiting the demand may affect the supply. Nurse when your baby is hungry and try not to watch the clock.

Other remedies for boosting a milk supply include natural or herbal substances such as Mother’s Milk Tea, Fenugreek seeds or capsules, Alfalfa, and Nettle Leaf. Researching the best way to use these remedies in conjunction with your life style can help to promote your milk supply. Keep in mind that nutrition can play a large part in your supply as well. Keeping hydrated and eating well helps to ensure that the body and its systems are working to their best potential.

Tongue Tied Baby – This condition affects the frenulum of the newborn baby, causing a tightening that restricts the suckling reflex and motion. This can be quickly and easily corrected via a very simple surgery. The breastfeeding relationship may then continue as normal. The help of a Lactation Consultant may prove very helpful during this time to help assure that the baby can learn to properly latch on.

Above all else, you need support while learning how to breastfeed. Studies show that when a woman gets support from friends and family, particularly immediately after birth, she’s more likely to have a successful breastfeeding relationship. If you feel that you’re not getting the support that you desire, there are many online and real life communities and groups made just for you. Seeking out these groups while still pregnant can give you the edge you need and the tools necessary to overcome any hurdle you may face on your journey through breastfeeding.

Related posts:

Breastfeeding

Natural herbal cream to treat and prevent cracked nipples during breastfeeding

Breastfeeding Information
